Turkey will not change its clocks

For the first time since the introduction of the astronomical summer/winter time change, Turkey will not change its clocks.

Until now, there was no time difference between Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria, but with the transition of the latter two to astronomical (winter) time, Turkey will be one hour ahead of them.

The time difference will continue until the date when the two Eastern European EU member-countries switch to summer time again in 2026. Then the time difference will be equalized.

Meanwhile, MEPs have agreed to end the seasonal clock change after a debate in the European Parliament. However, the main obstacle to the final adoption of the decision remains the Council of the European Union, which has not yet come up with a common position.

The initiative to stay on the same time all year round dates back to 2019. At that time, a legislative procedure was launched on the proposal of the European Commission.

The Commission’s actions were provoked by a large-scale consultation of European citizens. It involved 4.6 million people, of whom 84% voted in favor of abolishing the clock change.

However, the process is currently blocked in the Council of the EU. MEPs are expected to send an official request to the Council to clarify the main obstacles to finalizing the procedure.
