Lebanon: UN peacekeepers warn of ‘obvious violations’ following latest Israeli airstrikes

These strikes come as the Lebanese army continues its operations aimed at controlling unauthorized weapons and infrastructure in southern Lebanon, a year after the announcement of the cessation of hostilities in the country.

“We urge the Israel Defense Forces to take advantage of the liaison and coordination mechanisms available to them. » UNIFIL said. “We warn Lebanese actors against any reaction that could further aggravate the situation. »

Meanwhile, the Security Council is currently in Lebanon to meet with national authorities, after visiting Syria earlier this month.

    Violation of key agreement

UNIFIL stressed that Thursday’s airstrikes constitute “flagrant violations” of Security Council Resolution 1701which ended hostilities between Israeli forces and Hezbollah in 2006.

On Thursday evening, peacekeepers on patrol were approached by six men on three mopeds near the Bint Jbeil neighborhood, with one man firing approximately three shots into the rear of the vehicle. No one was injured.

“Attacks against peacekeepers constitute unacceptable and serious human rights violations. resolution 1701“, stressed UNIFIL and urged both parties to respect their commitments in order to safeguard the progress made so far.

UNIFIL continues to monitor the situation in southern Lebanon and assist both sides in implementing the agreement.
