Orthodox Patriarchs to Participate in Security Conference in Jordan

An international conference titled “The Aqaba Process – Balkan Interfaith Dialogue” is taking place on December 9 in Bethany, on the Jordan River, at the site where John the Baptist baptized the Lord Jesus Christ. It is being organized to mark the tenth anniversary of King Abdullah II’s peace initiative. The “Aqaba Process” is an international initiative led by Jordan and launched by King Abdullah II in 2015. It serves as an informal forum for developing strategies against terrorism and extremism with an emphasis on security coordination, intelligence sharing, countering online radicalization, and strengthening regional stability by bringing together world leaders, security officials, and military experts.

33 meetings have been held so far. In April 2025, the last meeting was held in Sofia under the auspices of Bulgarian President R. Radev and King Abdullah II, which was dedicated to the security of The Balkans.

The work of the conference in Jordan will be attended by Patriarch Theophilus III of Jerusalem, Patriarch John X of Antioch, Serbian Patriarch Porphyry, and Albanian Archbishop John, along with hierarchs from their churches, as well as Christian, Jewish, and Muslim spiritual leaders from the Middle East and the Balkans.

The theme of the conference is “Bridges Between People: Promoting Understanding for Peaceful Coexistence.”
